Happiness is a big topic, one which each of us has a different perspective of. What makes one person happy, can make the next person sad! Small Steps Can Make You Happier Everyday – I look at a realistic and easy approach in taking small incremental actions to help make you feel good….
It’s a big question, but does it have a big answer?
For many, finding happiness is an unachievable aim that no matter how much they try to get there, it slips through their fingers at each corner.
So many people search for happiness all their lives, waiting for the ‘big’ events to bring them fulfilment – travel, having a family, having a successful career.
But need it lie in these ‘big’ moments…
Looking too far down the road
Small Steps Can Make You Happier Everyday
Humans tend to look at life through the lens of comparison…’the grass is greener on the other side’
Meaning – What you don’t have…is what would make you happy.
Friends, neighbours, people on social media may appear to have it all, but we know that on most occasions, we see everyone’s highlight reels, it is not reality…especially if viewed on social media. It’s time to steer away from looking at others and go inside yourself to find what makes you happy.
But really, with all that said – is happiness easy to achieve?
It could be. If you apply intention to what you do in life, being aware of everything around you and recognising what gives you joy…that’s a start. It’s just a matter of altering your mindset.
Happiness can be in a fleeting moment that touches you, making your heart swell. It doesn’t need to be a continuous feeling inspired by exterior events. It comes from anywhere…everywhere and within you.
It’s up to you to encourage these moments.
Small changes and additions to your existing life can have a huge affect on your happiness.
You don’t need to climb a mountain – travel to the other side of the world – or live in a beach hut on a tropical paradise to make you happy…
Don’t get me wrong – if any of these things appeal to you and you have a burning desire to do certain things with your life – then do them!
Small Steps Can Make You Happier Everyday:
Are you searching for happiness but never seem to really feel it? Perhaps your life has fallen into an endless routine? You feel you are just getting through the day to then start the same routine the next day…
These tips are for you if you are in a lull:
(But I would recommend you listen to your thoughts and emotions – if there is something more that is affecting you – regret, grief, these need to be acknowledged and worked on.)
1. Change something you see everyday. Surround yourself with what you love.
Look around you, is there anything that annoys you in your house or surroundings.
I’m not endorsing you to go out and buy stuff! But I do encourage you to have things near that you love, if you don’t love or get a sense of happiness, then consider changing the item.
I changed my bedspread. Everyday I would pass my bed and a part of me would screw up my nose – I hated our bedsheets, they clung to my body easily and they felt like cheap polyester! I didnt even realise how much I hated them until I really thought about what I would change in my house.
Now we have new bedsheets and I love them – they make me happy just looking at them and they feel so good to sleep in. Heaven.
2. Make a routine you love
Like the bedspread above, I drink a cup of coffee from my favourite mug each day. This act alone makes me feel good, which I incorporate into my routine. Each day when my toddler goes down for his nap, I have my coffee from my favourite cup, enjoy the peace and the simplicity of just drinking, then welcome the opportunity to sit down to write. Working this into my routine, means I have bit of pleasure while I work.
An update – I am staying with friends at present. And I bought myself a beautiful mug in transit so I could enjoy my coffee from it everyday. It felt a little silly at first, but it’s so worth it.
3. Write 3 things you are grateful for everyday
One of the most important and easy things to do. I have found this process really lifts my mood. Just addressing and acknowledging three things I am grateful for each day makes me realise just how lucky I am.
4. Listen to music that makes you feel good
Maybe it’s singing along with Adele, Beyonce, or screaming at the top of your lungs to rock ballads. Music is the best tonic for getting all those negative emotions away:
A study shows that listening to music increases positive emotion through the reward centers of our brain, stimulating hits of dopamine that can make us feel good.
Right now we are in the age of information. Not necessarily good information at that! News, podcasts, tv, radio – lots of talking, lots of opinions and lots of distractions. Take a little time out each day to listen to some music while your washing the dishes, at the gym – it’ll give you a boost far more than listening to someone talk.
