Winds of Change: September Slow Living
August’s warmth fades slowly into the crisp, golden days of September, a month where nature begins to shift. There’s something magical about this time of year—the gentle dance between summer’s lingering embrace and the whisper of autumn on the horizon. As an author, this seasonal change fuels my creativity, offering a perfect moment to pause, reflect, and set new intentions.
Helen Hunt Jackson once said, “September days are here, with summer’s best of weather and autumn’s best of cheer.”
This couldn’t resonate more as I flip the calendar to September 1st. The air still holds the heat of summer, yet the sky darkens earlier, inviting the quiet of autumn evenings. September, for me, truly embodies the best of both worlds. It’s a time to savour the warmth, take in the starry night skies I’ve missed during the brighter summer months, and prepare for the creative burst that fall inspires.
This month, I’m determined to channel this seasonal energy into my writing—giving one last, heartfelt push to finish my novel. On a personal level, I’m also entering my 30th week of pregnancy, adding another layer of excitement and preparation for what’s to come. September feels like the perfect time to reflect and prepare.
September’s Inspirations
There’s something about September that stikes a chord with artists. From Natalie Imbruglia to Frank Sinatra, and even Barry White, countless songs have been written in celebration of this time of year. Perhaps it’s the melancholic beauty of summer’s end, or the gentle introduction to fall that stirs such creativity. It’s a reminder that, as the world slows down, we too can embrace the quiet magic of change.
In this spirit of reflection, here are a few things I’m incorporating into my September slow living. Maybe they’ll inspire you to find your own rhythm this month.
What I’m Doing This September
Bringing in the Harvest
This year is my first harvest in our rented home, and I’m thrilled by the unexpected abundance from our plum tree. I always thought two trees were necessary for fruit, but this little tree has outdone itself! I’ve enjoyed the plums fresh off the branch, and they’ve made their way into jams, crumbles, and my personal favourite—German plum cake.
Spicing Up Life
Autumn is the season of cozy spices—cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin spice—but I’ve never been one to chase after the latest Starbucks craze. Instead, I’ve created my own simple spiced latte recipe that brings comforting warmth into every cup. It’s easy to make at home, and the aroma alone is enough to brighten any September morning.
Easy Autumnal Spiced Latte Recipe:
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground ginger
- ½ teaspoon allspice
Mix these spices with a splash of hot water to release their flavours, then add your coffee shot (or two). Top with warm milk and a dusting of cinnamon or chocolate, and you’re ready to enjoy autumn in a cup!
Decorating for Autumn
While I’ve adored the sunflower wreath hanging on our door through late summer, it’s time for a small transformation. September invites the rich hues of autumn—burnt oranges, deep reds, and golden yellows. I’ll be adding leaves, small pumpkins, and some new finds my husband doesn’t yet know about (he told me not to buy more pumpkins, but really…who can resist?). Little autumnal mushrooms and other delights will be sprinkled around the house, quietly welcoming fall.
Embracing the Night
Oh, how I’ve missed the night sky. Stargazing is one of my favourite ways to connect with the changing seasons, and here in northern Scotland, we’re treated to spectacular night skies. Shooting stars, the Milky Way, even the occasional northern lights—September’s cooler evenings that are perfect for wrapping up in a blanket, sipping tea, and watching the heavens unfold. It’s a moment of peace amidst the busyness of life.
Slowing Down and Looking Ahead
September’s gentle shift encourages me to slow down, even when part of me wants to hold onto the fast pace of summer. With the baby on the way and the final chapters of my novel unfolding, this feels like a time for balancing both reflection and productivity. I’m embracing the slower, quieter rhythms of the month, and would love to hear how you plan to spend your September.
