Self care is often thrown about as a ‘must do’ in this modern age. Our fast paced lives leave little time for much else, but it is especially important for mums to practise self care. So if you’re a mum, or finding it impossible to make moments for self care, then this post is for you – I have compiled realistic & simple self-care ideas for mothers.
Everyone should be kind to themselves, but mothers in particular need to prioritise self love. You are the ones who nurture all around you, you’re there as a shoulder to cry on, you’re behind the warm hug when the little one falls, you’re a support and carer through and through.
But who takes care of you? You may be lucky to rely on others, but for the most part no-one can fully know what you need other than you.
Do you feel you are being stretched thin?
Are you overwhelmed?
Do you dismiss your own needs, focusing all your attention onto your child?
It’s understandable that planning self care can fall to the bottom of the list, but not taking time for you can have an adverse effect on your health. You may become stressed, irritable, and tired which can lead to burnout. It’s not worth the risk! Why sacrifice your health (and sanity)?
This is not another thing to make you feel bad mamma – this is just an encouraging, helpful nudge in the right direction, meant with love.
Simple self care for mothers
There can be many different ways to practise self care, but what is most important for you is to be quick, realistic, but worthwhile.
I could tell you to go have a bath every evening, or even watch a good movie – but chances are, (especially for new mums out there) there’s just no time to do even those simple things! If you have any time, those precious moments are prioritised for sleeping!
In this post I’m sharing some quick self care routines to incorporate into your day. You can do these from home and they do not require anything other than you! But all these suggestions can be done everyday, and shouldn’t take away too much of your time…but still allowing nourishment for your mind and body.
I hope you find them helpful…
Simple Self-Care Ideas For Mothers
Look after your hands. After dish washing, gently rub in hand moisturizer, taking time to enjoy the soothing sensation on your skin & the lotion scent
Eat well. Prepare your breakfast the night before – take the time to be mindful while making overnight oats. Smell the cinnamon you sprinkle, be conscious of the fruit you include, etc.
Fresh air. Get outside for a walk – even just ten minutes will improve your mood. Pop the babe in the pram or carrier and venture out
Exercise. Yoga session on YouTube for ten minutes, or some simple stretches while you’re boiling the kettle for your morning brew
Daily cleanse. In the shower, take time to enjoy washing your hair & body – smell the scent of the shampoo and enjoy massaging it into your head.
Read. Try and avoid baby books – likely you’ll be scrolling through all things baby related on google throughout the day! Instead try to focus on reading for pleasure – a fiction book, or something that will bring you joy.
