I’m sure you’ve been told the benefits of meditating, but like me you ‘didn’t have time’ or you’re ‘easily distracted’? Well, I Meditated Every Morning For One Week, This Is What I Found Out…
Meditating is really like Marmite (or Vegemite!)… you either love it or hate it.
I tried it – thought meh! not for me for several reasons:
- I couldn’t get comfy – sitting in the same spot would make my legs tingle
- I would become distracted with my thoughts/or noise outside
- I’d feel self conscious in case any of my housemates came in while I was in a meditative state
- I’m not a spiritual / woo-woo person, so really it’s wasted on me
What Is Meditation
Meditation is a practice where one can focus the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity. The outcome is to be mentally clear and emotionally calm.
Meditation is practised in numerous religious traditions and has been around for thousands of years.
What Made Me Try Meditation?
It all started when I was heavily pregnant and the idea of giving birth frightened me, so my controlling self jumped at the chance of Hypnobirthing. With Hypnobirthing you are conditioning your mind and body to relax for birth. By the way, for any pregnant mums to be – I recommend Hypnobirthing!
A big part was meditation and visualisation – which I really struggled with. My mind would wander to what I’d make for dinner, or mentally remember appointments. It took some time, but with the prospect of what was waiting for me – birth – I really focused my attention into it.
I Meditated Every Morning For One Week & This Is What I Found Out…
Skip forward a year and I have started meditating.
For some weeks now I’ve used YouTube for guided meditations. I wake around an hour before the rest of the house, and tip-toe quietly to our lounge to begin…
#1 Mindful Meditation
The first week I meditated for 5 minutes in the morning using a simple mindful breathing exercise. This was so easy and 5 minutes passed like a flash.
After doing this for a few days I noticed I was paying more attention to little things throughout the day and becoming more aware of my feelings and reactions.
For example – If I stumped my toe, I would understandably be angry, but that anger would pass onto the tasks that followed. I realised why I was in an irritated/angry mood to start with.
Mindfulness meditation = Made me aware
#2 Visualisation Meditation
The second meditation I visualised my goals and what I want to manifest in my life. This one was longer, and encouraged me to imagine and focus my thoughts. I really enjoyed this session and felt content immediately afterwards. I love the excitement and joy of thinking on what I really want.
So the days that followed I was eager to wake up early and dedicate that time to ‘dreaming’ – it feels like a treat and almost indulgent. And this gave me a sense of being really present for the rest of the day.
My irritations from day to day life had eased and I felt pretty positive and relaxed as a result.
Manifestation meditation = Made me present with others and happy in my life.
Another finding
Meditation can be versatile so if there is something particular you want in life, or to focus on – you can!
Meditation can be specific to:
Stress reflief, positivity, for sleep, anxiety, the list goes on.
If you’re easily distracted, that’s fine – just acknowledge that you are distracted and gently guide your thoughts back to the meditation. As long as you can guide your mind back, it just takes practise – so don’t be hard on yourself.
Tips For You To Start Meditation Too
Start small. Figure out if there’s something in particular you want to meditate on
But in the meantime, I recommend as a starting point to begin first thing in the morning or last thing at night. Use a simple meditation of mindful breathing for 5 minutes is good – breath in and out focusing on your breath only, whenever a thought or distraction enters your mind, guide your focus back to the simple act of breathing.
I recommend this video for a guided meditation of mindful breathing if you struggle to do it by yourself.
Good luck! Be patient with yourself and enjoy it.
