Do you feel like you’re never catching your tail? Like a deer stuck in headlights or running around like a headless chicken? It can feel difficult to break free! Don’t fret, I will help you tackle this endless cycle and declutter your mind with easy steps!
Are you an over-thinker?
Then you’re like me!
I have been looking into this as I am currently writing a women’s fiction book (oh I’m an author if you didn’t know) and struggling to find any words in my head to put onto paper. Not only writing related – I can’t focus on one thing at a time – there’s endless chores and tasks to do leaving me pulled in all directions. I then feel like I’m spending time on tasks I shouldn’t. My brain buzzing and fizzing with distractions and guilt…help!
Will Cleaning The House Help Declutter My Mind?
I thought I’d feel better if I cleaned out my wardrobe of any old items, so recently I delved into old suitcases filled with clothes, and riffled through my cupboards for any items, and any that didn’t ‘bring me joy’ as Marie Kondo advises – I packed away. The process actually made me feel better for giving things to charity. It was only after the bags were filled that I realised – oh good, now I can get more new stuff! Look at all that space I can fill!
I do believe clearing physical items may help the mind, but I would focus on mental items first…
Would Decluttering My Mind Make Me Happier?
Well that depends, do you think you need a cleanse?
Mind clutter can be due to one’s inability to let go of the past. Obsessing on ‘what-if’s, or focusing on mistakes you’ve made in the past can be toxic for your brain. Learn to let go of the negative thoughts, they are not doing your mind any favours, and are a waste of energy….what’s done is done. Let go.
The act of letting go surely would contribute to feeling free, content, mindful and…happy?
Does Social Media Affect My Mood?
We spend a lot of our lives online scrolling through social media. And what we consume online is just as important as what food we consume. Stop and think the next time you’re on Instagram, how do you feel? Do you feel inspired, relaxed, happy, content, intrigued…or do you feel deflated, agitated and that your life is nothing in comparison to the people you follow?
Something to consider is – Would you be happier if you stopped following some people, that you know deep down..make you feel crap?
It can be easier said than done.
I am pretty strict with who I follow online and have culled a few strays, so to speak! This is a huge part of our daily lives – so if this is impacting your mental health…loose them, don’t carry them everywhere you go.
What Initial Steps Should I Take To Declutter My Thoughts
The steps/actions below are all under the banner of ‘mindfulness’.
- Try ‘a brain dump’ in the morning. Use a notebook and write down what is jumbled in your head, if you can make sense of it. If you are angry, say you are angry. Then really think why you are angry, and tackle this.
- Make your bed, – it’s a quick job to do, and a very easy and achievable one. I find as soon as I make my bed it does something to my brain, like ‘tick’ that’s one job done!
- Stop saying yes to everything. Not everyone is going to like you, it’s exhausting trying to please everyone. The magic word is not ‘Please’ – It’s ‘NO!’
- Stop rethinking of past issues, be in the moment. Start to acknowledge and appreciate the little things in your life. What happened today that made you feel good? Practise mindfulness….Writing a gratitude journal may help – (see my previous post on this)
- Sit quietly for 10-20 minutes a day, just being in your space without directing your focus elsewhere. In other words…meditation. I feel the word meditation deters people from trying the process, I struggle with this too. There are many videos on YouTube to do so. But really, just take some time out without any distractions.
You can do this, just start small and listen to what your body is telling you.
Until next time, dear reader.
