So you have found something you love to do..You’ve found your passion project…now what?
Are you at the beginning stage of your passion, you’re learning new things and feel you are thinking about it all the time – wanting to do it all day if you could?!
But are you hiding away in the creating phase, not admitting to anyone what you do as you feel like an imposter?
Or…
Maybe you’ve been working on this passion project for some time but nothing has come from it – labelling your passion as only a ‘hobby’ and spend your time making things for family and friends. Just the idea of putting you or your work out there is scary?
Do you want to be taken seriously and make money from this passion project, then the time for dreaming is over…let’s get doing!
Kick self doubt away
Like minded creatives
It’s important to surround yourself with people who support and encourage. If you don’t already have a good support network, I suggest befriend other creatives, people who will not see you as a threat but as an equal.
Comparison
If you find you are on social media comparing yourself to others, stop and consider if you really need to follow these people? Maybe you are a photographer and you follow another photographer, and every-time you see their work, instead of inspiring you, it only makes you feel worthless to even try.
Stop comparing yourself to others, and if you do – minimise the time spent looking at other people…cut out altogether if you can!
Congratulate yourself
Stop to acknowledge and congratulate your own achievements. You have passions and interests, so much so that you are wanting to take them onto the next level! That’s wonderful news! Not many people have the courage to do this, and you are developing your skill and improving, that certainly deserves a pat on the back.

You understand and want to take your creative project to the next level? Below are steps to take to get on that ladder…
Don’t waste time. Document!
You have spent all day designing, producing, writing, creating. You cannot waste this time. Document your journey – take photos of the different stages of your work, take snapshots of the before and after. This will make you see how far you’ve come and also get comfortable with seeing your work.
Post it!
That’s right, post your journey on social media. With the step above, you will have started to accumulate photographs of your work, now it’s time to post these and gradually gain followers. Why not make a reel of a typical day for you? Interact with other creatives, have fun! Involve others on your journey, it will give you motivation to keep going once you see you’ve got your own cheerleaders.
When I had my business as a fashion designer, I would post ‘behind the scenes’ videos and photos of what I was making and that was hugely popular. People want to see behind the curtain.
Get comfortable- but not too comfortable.
Plan an event or deadline – maybe there is a local makers market you could showcase at? Give yourself a goal to work towards, also a place that all those new followers can find your work.
It’s uphill, but you’ll reach the summit
There is a lot of work involved in starting your own passion project, but as long as you have the passion…it’ll be an enjoyable journey. You have done amazing to start, look ahead to your next goals but also celebrate your wins and daily small achievements. Taking the time to do this will keep you positive and able to focus on your creative journey.
