Should I Change Career As A New Mum?

by ClaireGillies Leave a Comment

Mum’s have a lot on their shoulders. There’s a pressure that as soon as you have a baby..it’s time to get back to work! Maybe you’re on maternity leave, or have taken time out to focus on the family – which you now find that you’re reluctant to go back to work.. That’s OK. Perhaps this is the time to listen to your concerns and ask yourself – Should I Change Career As A New Mum?

New Lessons in Motherhood

From my own experience. Having a baby has been wonderful, I marvel at my cheeky rascal everyday, seeing him grow has been such a joy! However, it is tough. All mothers I’m sure would agree! And a big part of motherhood is the little time you have!

I have found that I have to make the most of the time that I do get – the precious nap time I cram in all my writing. Squeezing as much productivity that I can into a tiny window. And in a way it’s streamlined my life – I have little time to procrastinate.

My old self would over-think so much, I don’t know how I got anything done!

The Dreaded Ticking Clock

Women, in particular face society pressures when it comes to careers and having kids. We go to college/university to learn the thing, then go to work at the thing we’ve studied, then work up the ranks and by the time we’ve worked up…we’re told we must have kids before we turn forty! There’s the pressure to have the good successful well paid job (that we love!)…and the family.

As much as we’re told that we can have everything we want – the reality is…it’s not easy and there’s even more work involved! It’s just unachievable to have everything – and I feel women only realise this once kids come into the picture. We need to stop adding more pressure on ourselves, we can’t have everything – something must take the backseat.

Having a baby can leave you with little time and energy, but it can also make you realise what you want…and what you don’t want.

Do you want a career change?

Some mother’s love going back to work, relishing the time they can be themselves again, while others realise that their interests and priorities have changed.

Is it too late to change career as a new mum?

No it’s not too late!

Mamma if you are unhappy in your current job, it’s not too late to try something new…or at least start to consider what you would like to do.

Below are steps to help you figure out what you want to do for a career..

Think of your dream life

OK, the fun part:

Without focusing on the aspect of money, what life would you like to live:

I’d like to have more kids, to live in the country and work from home doing what I love.

Visualise a day in the life of what you desire. Really get into the daydream of your dreamlife.

What do you do when you wake? Who’s in your dream life? What do you do for breakfast? Do you work from home, or do you commute to an office you love? Do you do yoga in your pyjamas in your garden? Or do you take the dog for a walk at the nearby beach?

Get specific!

What are you interested in?

Let’s join the dots – you have an image of what you desire – now let’s focus on what you want to do with your time.

Not sure what you want to do? That’s OK, get a pen and notebook ready…

Make a list of what you are interested in. What do you like to do that’s just for you. This can be anything – TV shows you like to watch, things you would do if you could.

“Going to art exhibitions… watching project runway… watching costume dramas. Shopping in vintage garage sales for one-off pieces”

Retrain your mind:

Let’s say you’re interested in sewing but you don’t believe you’re accomplished enough? Now is the time to teach yourself the basics in sewing.

And here’s a tip – you don’t need to be an incredible seamstress to start your own business in the sewing field. Maybe you want to make custom bags? great! All you need to do is to be able to sew a bag… there’s a zillion YouTube videos out there to teach you.

Decide on what you’d like to try out and start small.

Get comfortable with your interests…see what makes you excited.

Dont quit your day job just yet

The above steps are to help steer you onto the path that you desire. But you still need to pay the bills, so for the time being keep it as a side hustle until you are comfortable with relying solely on this as a full time business.

You got this girl – keep going!
