Creativity is a special gift that humans give to the world. It is something we do for beauty, (maybe for practical reasons too!) for beauty’s sake. I believe everyone is creative, we all have something to give. But sometimes we discover that our creative venture, now doesn’t fill us with the excitement it once did. The creative well may have dried up.. How To Get Your Creativity Back When You Think Its Lost..
Here’s how…
I think we put pressure on ourselves to remain on the creative path we’ve created – especially if it’s how we earn a living.
But things change.
Maybe you have experienced a bereavement, a major change in your life, or perhaps you just don’t love what you do anymore.
It’s scary when you’re hit with a thought –
I can’t do this anymore
I have no energy left.
No motivation and no creativity left in me.
This blog post is for you.
You’re Not Alone
I have experienced this first hand and I want to extend an arm around you, giving you a hug.
I have been there too.
I fell out of love with my fashion business. I was burnt out, and when a close person to me had passed away, it made me want nothing to do with my business anymore. I had no interest and no energy to keep going. It felt like such an effort to do anything, that the idea of planning out my business for the year – striving for more, designing, attending shows, marketing, working with new clients – all of it did not excite me anymore.
What I Did When My Creativity Left Me
I put everything in my garage and did something I thought I’d never do – I willingly went to work for someone else. I wanted to be told what to do – just go into work, then hopefully…gradually I’d develop love again for my craft.
The funny thing was, the job I found involved sewing.
I taught students how to sew. I had a dedicated sewing classroom with equipment to educate.
This helped me, and made me see other avenues – like teaching, which I had not considered before.
Spoiler: As good as the job was, it still did not encourage me to return back to my fashion business.
And that’s OK
I don’t need to force anything.
You don’t need to force anything.
I’m sure I will eventually get back into sewing, but for now it’s just not the time.
Unexpected Creativity May Appear
When I stopped my business as a clothing designer, I didn’t stop being creative. What appeared was another creative venture – one I had no time for before – writing.
Since then I have written a book (available on Amazon!), and currently I have another 3 books in the pipeline. Also, since putting the sewing on hold, I had a baby, and with that the idea of sewing seemed too difficult. Writing came to me easily and was a way I could apply my focus elsewhere when baby would nap.
I believe this all worked out the way it should. I’m open to sewing again…but only when the time is right.
How To Get Your Creativity Back When You Think Its Lost
My tips below are to help you find your creativity, whatever it may be:
Don’t force it
With creativity it’s important you don’t do something for the sake of doing it. If you are able to take this opportunity to do other things that might nourish that creative well, then do it! Things like reading, walking in nature, and journaling your thoughts can help.
Any creativity time is good creativity
It may not be what you ‘usually’ do. If you get a slight yearning to try something new, whatever it is – do it! Your thoughts and feelings are directing you to something – trust it. Nothing may come out of it, but maybe it might be just what you need to do right now to soothe your mind and feel realigned again.
Set the bar low
Take really small steps. Then when you do achieve that goal – it makes you feel you’re getting somewhere. Give yourself a pat on the back. You’re doing the best you can!
Your Creativity Is Not Gone
Maybe you have fallen out of love with your creative path, and that is normal. We can’t always have the love and interest in one thing for all our years on this earth. This may be the time to pause and do what calls to you. This may be the start of something new, or maybe you just need a break and a chance to fall in love again with your craft. Whatever it might be, you will know.
