Many things can hinder us in life; relationships going sour, your health deteriorating, your job filling you with dread…but a big thing you may have overlooked is…YOU! You may be on your way to achieving the business or life you always wanted – but just can’t get over the hill – something is stopping you from being happy. Let’s look at – 7 Reasons Why You’re Sabotaging Your Own Success
What is self sabotage?
Self-sabotage refers to behaviours that may hold you back and prevent you from doing what you want to do.
7 Reasons Why You’re Sabotaging Your Own Success:
Fixed mindset. Are you stubborn? Do things need to go your way or nothing at all? Being focused on a path with no flexibility can stop you from actually moving forward.
Comparison – Do you compare yourself to others so much that you don’t know what you really want? Believing that you’re not good enough and focusing on other people’s work/lives..can lead to…
Impostor syndrome – Do you find it difficult to accept your own accomplishments? Do you never feel ‘good enough’?
Fear of success or failure – Even if you do go ahead with your dream/business, you’re worried about failing or being so successful that the idea of achievement scares you?
Negative self talk – If anything should go wrong or you face a challenge, do you chastise yourself – “this always happens to me” “I can’t do this!” etc
Procrastination – Procrastination means delaying or postponing something. Are you stalling because you are not confident in your own work? It may feel like you are perpetually running in a circle.
Perfectionism – This is seen as a good trait to have, but Perfectionism can mentally block you – making you fixate on imperfections and being critical of yourself. If you are a perfectionist, it’s difficult to be happy with anything.
Do any of these resonate with you?
What life do you want to live? What does success look like to you?
My Own Sabotaging Beliefs
In my previous businesses, I suffered all of the above – so I can relate to this topic. It was exhausting to have one hindrance in my life, let alone 7 reasons why I felt I wasn’t good enough!
My main negative traits were perfectionism, fixed mindset and impostor syndrome. I felt I needed to do things my way, I knew what I didn’t want, but felt paralysed mentally. Let’s also throw in comparison too for good measure, which I suffer from at time of writing this!
I was given business advice by several successful entrepreneurs, but I didn’t listen to anyone – and now I see I should have been more flexible and took chances. In retrospect, If I understood these factors of self sabotage, I could have saved myself so much time consumed with my negative beliefs and could have moved on, consciously improving my mindset in the process.
How to overcome self sabotage
Each of the reasons above carry their own weight for one little blog post to delve into!
You may identify with some more than others, but all these reasons highlight the negative mindset behind self sabotage.
From here you can start to recognise what ones come up for you.
If you find yourself unable to move forward in your business/life, then pay attention to what you are doing/thinking:
Are you talking negatively to yourself?
Do you scroll through social media and compare yourself to others – which demotivates you?
Or are you too scared to take the next step for fear of what people might think if you fail or become successful..
Whatever the reason, think of what could be holding you back.
- Write it down.
- Consciously read through it. Forgive whoever is making you feel this way, forgive yourself. And let it go.
Be conscious of your mindset – write things down, forgive yourself and release this behaviour.
Clear out the negative and make way for positive progress!
